Launched in 2012, the Master's in International Security is an established, interdisciplinary programme that aims to educate future professionals in security and peace studies. It provides students with a comprehensive set of analytical skills to help them understand the complex security challenges of the 21st century – from the return of conventional war, emergence of new technologies and hybrid forms of conflict, resource scarcity and climate change, nuclear weapons proliferation, to transnational terrorism and criminal violence.

Applying different theoretical lenses to a wide range of historical and current cases, the Master's in International Security provides students with the academic rigour and policy relevance necessary to address the pressing problems of security governance on the national, regional, and global levels.

Students acquire a truly holistic understanding of international security by choosing from over 80 courses on different aspects of international relations, security, development, and public policy. The Master’s programme covers both new and traditional security issues, including subjects, such as peace processes and conflict resolution, civil war and ethnic conflict, terrorism, intelligence studies, cybersecurity, humanitarian action, and international migration. Students can also develop different regional specializations in the Middle East, Latin America, Europe, or Asia.

IBEI’s teaching model emphasizes small-size classes, personalized attention, and active student participation in the learning process.
