Target group
The Master's in International Relations is a multidisciplinary programme intended to educate future professionals. Its aim is to provide students with a deep understanding of the essential analytical tools and knowledge needed to tackle current problems in the international sphere; it also aims to develop transferable skills that can be applied to any career.
The Master's programme presents an innovative proposal to meet the challenges that have arisen from the globalisation of recent years. Our goal is to educate professionals with excellent abilities when it comes to understanding and analysing international phenomena. The modern world has become much more interdependent and it displays forms of government that are structured into different levels within the current complex governance system. Our educational programme takes these changes into consideration, integrating them into its content and providing a wide range of courses. These offer current theories of international relations, the problems of governance on an international scale, managing peace and security in societies in conflict, ethical dilemmas in politics and the international economy, and the way in which international organisations operate.
IBEI students come from more than 50 countries around the world. The students' profile is varied in terms of both origin and prior studies, although the majority has a degree in the social sciences. Many of them have studied or worked abroad before coming to Barcelona. There is a very international atmosphere, in which the students' different viewpoints favour cross-cultural debates and reflections both during and outside classes.
The international aspect of the Master's programme is also reflected in the languages of instruction. Students can choose either the bilingual option in which core courses are available in both Spanish and English, or the English-language option, in which students follow the core courses in English only. Electives are mainly offered in English; however there is also a wide choice of electives that are taught in Spanish. IBEI encourages the practice of two major international languages for professional purposes as an important and distinctive asset.
