The Geopolitics of the Sea: A Multidimensional Analysis of the Mediterranean
6 hour course by Raffaele Mancini, Senior Environment and Sustainability Expert
- Schedule: 2 July (8:00-11:00) & 3 July (17:30-20:30)
- Venue: IBEI
The course offers a comprehensive analysis of the Mediterranean Sea through a multidimensional framework, examining its significance from three critical perspectives: i) first, it critically assesses the geopolitical tensions that threaten the region’s sustainable development, examining the complex interplay between economic interests, environmental concerns, and political conflicts; i) second, it explores the invaluable intangible benefits that the marine environment provides to society—ranging from cultural and historical heritage to ecological and recreational value—underscoring the urgent need for regional and international efforts to ensure its preservation; iii) third, the course delves into the economic potential of the Mediterranean’s marine resources, commonly referred to as the "blue economy." It highlights the sea’s strategic importance as a driver of economic growth, emphasizing business and investment opportunities, as well as its capacity to generate employment across strategic sectors. By integrating these perspectives, the course aims to equip future decision-makers and professionals with the knowledge and analytical skills necessary to harness the opportunities presented by the expanding blue economy, all while navigating the intricate and often volatile political landscape of the Mediterranean region.
