We are pleased to announce a call for papers for a workshop that aims to bring together political and social scientists doing empirical work, including descriptive, qualitative, correlational, and causal analysis, about artificial intelligence and large technological companies. There is little doubt that artificial intelligence will be a profoundly transformative technology with a huge potential for innovation, but there are growing concerns about the economic and political power of large technological firms, geopolitical risks, and various harms produced by digital technologies.
We seek contributions on a variety of topics such as: who are the key actors and their stated positions on political topics, which activities do they perform to influence public policy, which regulatory efforts (including self-regulation and social responsibility) are under way, and which political conflicts related to artificial intelligence and large technological companies exist (ranging from efforts to unionize workers, environmental conflicts over the use of water and electricity, digital rights activism, strategic litigation, geopolitical conflicts, use of digital tools in schools, etc.).
Workshop Format
The workshop will center on paper presentations, with ample time for feedback and networking. We will explore the possibility of proposing a special issue to an academic journal as an outcome of the workshop.
