Benjamin A. Schupmann (Yale-NUS College)

Registration is required

We are pleased to have Prof. Benjamin A. Schupmann present the key arguments from his book, 'Democracy Despite Itself: Liberal Constitutionalism and Militant Democracy' for the EU-VALUES Network.

At a time when populism, illiberal democracy, and democratic backsliding are reshaping global politics, Schupmann offers a fresh and compelling response to these challenges. Drawing on the insights of John Rawls and Carl Schmitt, he develops a new theory of modern constitutionalism and democracy, one that addresses the paradoxes of militant democracy and explores how liberal democracies can defend themselves against anti-democratic forces without compromising their core values.

Joining the conversation is Dr. Tom Theuns, a valued friend of the Network and an expert on safeguarding democracy in the EU. Dr. Theuns will share his reflections on Schupmann’s work, offering critical insights and perspectives on its relevance for the challenges facing European democracies today.

This will be a great discussion on the fragility and resilience of democracy in the modern world. Don't miss out, register now!
