Gender and Feminism in the Middle East

10 hour course by Nadje Al-Ali (Brown University)

  • Schedule: 4-6 July (9:00-12:20). Venue: IBEI
  • Format: Hybrid

The aim of this course is to offer an overview of the key issues in the study of gender and feminism in the Middle East. It will provide a gendered understanding of prevailing structures, ideologies, and social practices and center gender as an analytical lens to understand wider trends in the Middle East. Looking at specific historical and empirical case studies, the course will focus on the intersections of gender with other structures of inequality, such as ethnicity, class, sexuality and religion. We will also explore historical and contemporary forms of feminist mobilization and knowledge production that challenge not only prevailing gender inequalities and injustices, as well as challenge heteronormativity but also provide resistance against authoritarianism, militarism and sectarianism in the region.
