What types of internships does IBEI offer and support?
IBEI supports three Internship Paths:
- Path 1: IBEI-arranged Internships

How can I find and apply for IBEI-managed internships?
Steps for Registering and Applying for Internships through the IBEI Career Center

IBEI internships must relate to international relations, security, development, and public policy.

What is the difference between curricular and extracurricular internships?
Curricular Internships are those that are part of the academic curriculum. They can be part of the academic curriculum either as a course (4 ECTS as part of the 60 credits) or as an additional course (4 ECTS credits, beyond the 60 credits). Both options require enrollment in the Internship course.
If you undertake a curricular internship and want to exchange the 4 credits for a course you have already taken, you can always request this by writing to the Academic Office (master@ibei.org) before the second semester exam period begins.
Extracurricular Internships. They do not appear on the academic record. However, extracurricular internships require an educational collaboration agreement.
Are there any fees associated with internships?
Curricular internships
Curricular Internships that are part of the academic record (4 ECTS as part of the 60 credits) do not require a fee unless the students want to extend the Master’s Thesis submission date.
Curricular Internships can also be part of an additional course (4 ECTS credits, beyond the 60 credits). The fee associated with assistance with paperwork has a cost of 60€.
The date range for all internships may require extending the Master’s Thesis submission date. Extending the date to submit the Master Thesis due to the internship costs 75€.
Extracurricular Internships:
Processing the internship agreement costs 60€.

What are the deadlines for completing internships?
Curricular Internships: Must be completed before the final thesis grades are awarded. These dates are November 14 or May 30.
Extracurricular Internships: Must follow the same deadlines as curricular ones, with specific conditions for certain programmes like Mundus MAPP and ILGSPD. They must complete their internships before August 30.
What if I find an internship on my own?
Notify the Academic Internship Coordinators with the internship details. IBEI will help establish an educational collaboration agreement if needed (Path 1, Path 2 - Q1).
How are internships assessed?
Assessment of internships require:

A supervisor’s report from the host institution.

A five-page personal report by the student on their internship experience. Both reports must be submitted within a month after the internship ends.
How many hours can an internship take?
Internships have a duration between 120 and 900 hours.
The internship is limited to a maximum of 19 hours per week. If the internship exceeds this limit, the student will need to transition to the part-time programme.
Starting After Classes End:

If you begin your internship after the end of classes, you are allowed to extend the number of hours you work per week.

A valid DNI/NIE/TIE, depending on your nationality.

If your TIE/VISA is set to expire during the internship period, you must renew it within 60 days or less before the expiration date.

A Spanish social security number is required for all internships, whether paid or unpaid. For paid internships, the host institution will handle social security registration. For unpaid internships, this responsibility falls to IBEI.
Internships within an IBEI Research Project:

What if I am a MMAPP or Glasgow (ILGSPD) Student?
MMAPP students can only do extracurricular internships because they already do an internship at CEU or ISS in their first year. They must finish by August 31st of their academic year at the latest.
ILGSPD students' internships will always be extracurricular and they can only do internships during the year they are at IBEI. Maximum deadline for internships with IBEI is August 31st of the first year.
What if my visa expires before August 31?
If someone's visa expires before August 31st, and the internship is in Spain, the internship will have to finish it when their visa expires.
How many internships can I do?
Students can do a maximum of one curricular internship and one extracurricular internship per academic year. The academic year runs from September 1st to August 31st.

These hours can be accumulated through a combination of curricular and extracurricular internships.
Curricular and extracurricular internships cannot be done in the same institution.
Can I do an internship in the first semester?
As a general rule, students cannot do internships during the first semester. Internships must start in the second semester.
Exception:
Internships starting in January may be approved on a case-by-case basis.
Can I finish the internship after submitting the TFM?
Standard Deadlines:

If the Master's Thesis (TFM) is submitted in September, internships must end by November 15th.

Extension Request:

Students can request an extension for the TFM submission specifically for internship purposes, provided that the internships are confirmed.
