In order to address the challenges posed to diplomacy by the transformations of information society globalization, with an approach which combines analysis and experience and the approach of the academician and that of the practitioner, this course focuses on Globalization and its consequences, Foreign Policy and Diplomacy, offering for this an analytical itinerary in four blocks or stages.

It begins with the approach to the International Society and the International System and its transformations in the era of the information society globalization and the challenge of building global governance (I), after which it deals with the relationship between culture, ideas and power in the International Society and makes an approach to the geopolitics of thought, paying also special attention to the paradigmatical implications of the global rise of China, as can be observed from the analysis of proposals from China for the reconfiguration of the Theory of International Relations (II). After analyzing the international actorness of the European Union, it undertakes the study of Foreign Policy (III), from its conception, planning and object to its execution. Finally, it focuses on diplomacy, undertaking a global approach to it, with special attention to the functions of the diplomat and the development of a diplomatic assignment (IV), as well as to multilateral diplomacy and European construction, from the perspective of the Council of Europe (V) and to diplomacy for the negotiation and construction of peace, with an approach from the experience of the Central American peace processes.

Avaluació

In each session, in addition to analyzing the compulsory readings together, short papers or presentations on complementary or optional readings will be required. Each student will have to do at least one throughout the course. At the end of it, a multiple choice test and a paper on a practical case will be requested.

The final evaluation will be made based on the attendance and participation (20%), the presentation (20%), the test (20%) and the paper/essay on the practical case (40%).
