This course investigates the intersections of gender, development, and globalization, focusing on theoretical frameworks and practical policy applications. It emphasizes defining and theorizing these intersections while critically examining how they manifest in research, policies, and practice. The course focuses on institutions and actors shaping development and globalization in today’s world, and the institutional gendered economic, political, and social outcomes. The course provides students with frameworks of analyzing gender disparities and inequalities in various contexts, while exploring the role of development and globalization actors in promoting or hindering gender equity.

The course is structured into three parts. The first part explores foundational theories of gender and development. The second part examines gender disparities and inequalities and the roles of various stakeholders, including governments, businesses, civil society organizations, and social movements.

The final part centers on pathways for gender-inclusive policymaking within institutions that shape development and globalization trends. It evaluates how these institutions can address global challenges and foster practices that advance gender inclusion across diverse contexts. This part equips students to analyze, critique, and envision transformative approaches to inclusive and equitable development.
