ICANN's CEO Göran Marby conducts a conference on the challenges of “regulating” the cyberspace at IBEI
On October 19th, ICANN's president & CEO Göran Marby conducted a conference at IBEI on the future of the internet and the challenges of 'regulating' the cyberspace.
The talk emphasized that the success of the internet is due to the massive participation of millions of users around the world: "The Internet it’s you: it grows when you connect", according to Marby.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is a nonprofit organization responsible for coordinating the maintenance and procedures of several databases related to the namespaces and numerical spaces of the Internet.
It was created to provide a service to this huge community of users, and to help ensure a stable, secure and unified global Internet. At present, some governments, the current US administration for instance, would like to create different types of Internet based on the economic capacity of people & companies. ICANN supports the idea of only one Internet based on the principle of Net Neutrality and the multi-stake holder approach.
Internet is global but local too. One the ICANN's challenges is to include different alphabets & languages while keeping global at the same time. Much of its work has concerned the Internet's global Domain Name System (DNS), including policy development for internationalization of the DNS system, introduction of new generic top-level domains (TLDs), and the operation of root name servers.

Göran Marby is the CEO & President of ICANN from 2016. He brings over 20 years experience as a senior executive in the Internet and technology sector, as well as his leadership as Director General at the independent regulatory body Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS), where he worked closely with international organizations and standards bodies. Prior to this, he served as CEO and founder of Appgate, a Swedish security software company (now Cryptzone in the U.S), where he grew the organization to a global company with customers in 35 countries and operations in the U.S. Before his seven years at Appgate, he was CEO for the advanced networks company Cygate Group (now owned by TeliaSonera) where he spearheaded operations in five countries with revenues in the range of 120 million euros. And as Country Manager for Cisco in Sweden, Marby led sales of all products and services. Marby holds a Bachelor of Science in Finance from the University of Gothenburg, School of Business, Economics and Law.
