The Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals (IBEI) invites applications for a Research Assistant to work on the research project “Informality and Global Governance: The Politics of Legal Change (INGOV)” funded under Programa Estatal de Generación de Conocimiento y Fortalecimiento Científico y Tecnológico del Sistema de I+D, Proyectos de I+D de Generación de Conocimiento, Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades. INGOV investigates the drivers of formalization and informalization processes across global institutions and assesses their impact on institutional performance.
We are seeking candidates at the post-graduate/pre-doctoral level with a background in political science, international relations and/or international law. Fluency in English, excellent writing skills, and experience with quantitative data collection and analysis are essential, including familiarity with one of the major statistical packages, like R or Stata. The ability to conduct qualitative research and a working knowledge of qualitative research methods are additional assets. Fluency in German or French could be helpful as well.
The candidate will contribute to INGOV by analyzing major shifts in the study and practice of global governance, especially as related to the growth of informal international organizations (IOs) and the politics institutional change. The specific duties will include collecting and analyzing original quantitative data, researching and writing up case studies, and working on various papers related to the project. The candidate will also be responsible for copyediting and background research such as literature reviews, as well as minor administrative tasks.
The project has a built-in training and capacity-building component and is ideal for candidates who seek to develop skills and insights related to the conduct and design advanced research projects. Upon successful performance, the candidate will be invited to co-author papers for conferences and journal submissions to support her/his career development. The work commitment is between 10-15 hours/week for 6 months, with the possibility of extension by up to one year. The start date is flexible but should be no later than November 2020. Remuneration is commensurate with a PhD grant under the Spanish government fellowship system
