The Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals (IBEI) invites applications for a Research Assistant position to work in the research project “The Democratic Qualities of Regulatory Agencies in Catalunya and their impact on Public Trust”, funded by the Generalitat de Catalunya (DEMOC). This project studies the levels of legal and in-practice transparency, accountability, participation and inclusiveness of four Catalan regulatory bodies.
We are seeking candidates at the post-graduate/pre-doctoral level with a background in political science, in economics, or in law, and with a willingness to conduct qualitative data collection and analysis. The position requires fluency in Catalan and in English.
The work commitment is 20 hours/week, for 6 months, with a possibility to extend. The position could be done partially remote (from home). However, some meetings will be taken place in person at IBEI, and the interviews will be held in person in Barcelona.
The candidates will contribute to the project by identifying the legal framework of the studied agencies, analyzing them, and summarizing the democratic qualities following a coding scheme. In addition, the candidates will research and identify relevant decision-makers in the studied bodies, contact them and conduct semi-structured interviews with them. The candidates will also be responsible for transcribing and translating interviews and performing minor administrative tasks.
The project has a built-in training and capacity-building component and is ideal for candidates who seek to develop skills and insights related to the conduct and design of advanced research projects. Upon successful performance, the candidates will be invited to co-author papers for conferences and journal submissions to support her/his career development. The starting date is October 1st, 2023.
