RESUMEN
Prof. Fishman examines whether Europe’s common currency has contributed in any tangible way to the large project of building a more cohesive and united Europe. After briefly reviewing the lively debate over the economic impact of the euro on the economies of participating member states, he concentrates on the impact – if any – of the common currency on European identity and social practice. Through a combination of ethnographic sources and survey research findings he reviews the existing evidence on this question. Drawing material from The Year of the Euro and from more recently available studies he examines attitudes and citizen practices of relevance for the project of European convergence.
